Yukon Spa
Dawson City, Canada
The Yukon Spa is a wellness and community centre designed for the remote town of Dawson City. The design of this project, now under construction, was driven by its unique cultural and environmental context.
Status: Under Construction
Dawson lies at the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike rivers, just south of the Arctic Circle. At its height in the 1890s, it was a key base of the Klondike Gold Rush. Today, the town describes itself as a “living historical community”. It has worked to preserve its unique character and is now a major tourist destination, drawing over 60,000 visitors each year.
The design of the Spa plays on Dawson’s historic tradition of false facades, adopting an unimposing heritage-style outward face that blends seamlessly into its environment, while concealing an inner world of minimalist tranquility and surprising moments.
A hidden courtyard on the first floor provides a discreet indoor-outdoor space which facilitates Nordic-style spa experiences and viewing opportunities for the northern lights.
